Dr Lofley

Hi! I'm Dr. Lofley.

Thanks for stopping by ProbioticFacts.com. I'm a family medicine physician, with a passion for using probiotics.

It wasn't always that way though. It all started a few years ago when my wife was asking...

"What is the best probiotic for GBS?"

I didn't know the answer (or if using a probiotic would even help). My wife had just tested positive for group B strep (GBS) while pregnant with our daughter Sophia.

She searched the internet and found a probiotic treatment claiming to treat GBS without antibiotics.

As a family physician, I was skeptical when my wife returned home from the health food store with a brown paper bag full of probiotics, kombucha, and sauerkraut. One week later we retested for the GBS infection.

Imagine my surprise... my wife's infection was cured

All of my medical training had taught me that the only way to treat GBS was with IV antibiotics during labor.

That would mean that during labor:

IV drip

 - the patient would have an IV with antibiotics

Hospital bed

have to spend most of the time lying in bed

Not to mention the risk for the baby to develop a serious infection and possibly a longer hospital stay.

What if there was another option?

I had encouraged patients to take probiotics to prevent or treat diarrhea caused by antibiotics, but I had never thought of what else could be treated with probiotics.

The potential benefits were exciting

  • Could I use probiotics instead of antibiotics to treat other infections?
  • What about antibiotic resistance? Could probiotics treat infections that were resistant to antibiotics?
  • What about other conditions? ... mental health ... IBS ...

So I developed a new hobby of reading medical journal articles about probiotics (yes, I'm kind of a nerd that way). There is a lot of research out there that I didn't even know existed.

I came across article after article supporting the benefits of probiotics

Well recognized medical journals had excellent studies supporting the use of probiotics for:

  • group B strep (GBS)
Nutrients Journal Article on GBS
  • preventing travelers' diarrhea
EpiH Journal Article on Travelers' Diarrhea
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
The Lancet Journal Article on IBS and Probiotics
  • and so many more.

Join me on my quest to find the best probiotics.

Come back often to see the newest facts.

To your health,

Kent J Lofley, DO
